The Pā

The Pā at Waikato University is now open. This marks a significant step in the university's commitment to creating an integrated and welcoming campus environment. This exciting project was made even more remarkable with the installation of our accessibility products, which brought a perfect finish to the building's many different surfaces.

Throughout the interior and exterior we’re multiple sets of stairs needing suitable nosings for safety and tactiles to alert pedestrians of approaching hazards. Our Total Tactilez team confidently supplied a range of products that best suited each aesthetic. Our Tactile Tactilez operations planner Dave Chambers said “It was a privilege working on such an iconic build. During the project we used our tri-drilling rig to increase efficiencies in installation”.

The tactiles include SH60N stainless steel with black carborundum insert and the brand-new stainless steel tactiles with luminescent insert. The stainless steel with luminescent insert provides an extra level of safety when navigating stairs in low light. Using the suns UV light to charge during the day means the luminescent strips shine bright for up to 8 hours during the night. Students and lecturers using The Pā during these times can feel confident navigating the stairs in these hours of the day.

The aesthetic wooden staircase near the entry of The Pā required special attention to detail. Our new rebated nosings blended seamlessly with the design, ensuring that safety and aesthetics went hand in hand. These nosings not only serve a practical purpose but also contribute to the overall visual appeal of the space.

Other nosings used in the building include PKD406 onto carpet tile covered stairs, DKR103 onto uncovered stairs, IKB440 and IKB439, onto rebated concrete.

The Pā at the University of Waikato is not just a building; it's a symbol of innovation, inclusivity, and the pursuit of excellence. We are excited to have played a part in this extraordinary project by supplying products that enhance both the form and function of this stunning campus landmark. The range of our accessibility products used on this project contributed to the overall success of the University of Waikato's vision for the Pā, creating a space that will be cherished for generations to come.
